This bud from a Christmas cactus is just peeking out and ready to bloom into a bright holiday flower. Sometimes they bloom closer to Thanksgiving, then again in the spring. I like the smooth shapes that the petals make before they unfurl. The dark backgrounds are a big challenge with watercolor and take many layers to achieve the rich translucent darks that make this painting so dramatic.
This painting is framed with a white metal 1" Neilsen frame for a contemporary look. It has a white archival mat and archival foam core backing and plexiglass. Frame size is 22.5" x 30".
For the past few years I've been painting flowers up so close that they envelop the viewer in their sensuality and rich color. Enlarged, they become almost abstractions from nature without seeing the outer shape or the environment around them.

Watercolor is my medium. I zoom in and compose from my photos to fill a picture plane with a compelling design that takes the viewer into an abstract and sensual world. I look for beautiful transitions of color or textures that could be expressed luminously with my many glazes of watercolor, or that might provide an opportunity for me to try new painting techniques. I paint the inner landscape of flowers calling these works Floralscapes. The shapes, designs and patterns inside flowers and plants are the subject that awakened my love of painting, giving me a chance to create images of stunning beauty while merging realism with an abstract sense of design.
