This close up watercolor of a moth orchid highlights the spiral composition of this point of view and features the delicate golden yellow core of the flower that the curling front petal is luring the viewer, and the bees, into. Painted with transparent watercolor on Arches cold press paper in many layers of glaze to build up the richness of the color while preserving the glow of the medium.
For the past year I've been painting flowers up so close that they envelope the viewer in their sensuality and rich color. Enlarged, they become almost abstractions from nature without seeing the outer shape or the environment around them. This view into the flower or plant I call "Floralscapes".
This watercolor is painted on 140# Arches Cold Press paper. It is an original watercolor painting, not a print. A Certificate of Authenticity comes with the watercolor signed by Sandy Haight. This painting is framed with a 1" white metal contemporary frame and 3.5" archival mat and backing....
Watercolor is my medium. I zoom in and compose from my photos to fill a picture plane with a compelling design that takes the viewer into an abstract and sensual world. I look for beautiful transitions of color or textures that could be expressed luminously with my many glazes of watercolor, or that might provide an opportunity for me to try new painting techniques. I paint the inner landscape of flowers calling these works Floralscapes. The shapes, designs and patterns inside flowers and plants are the subject that awakened my love of painting, giving me a chance to create images of stunning beauty while merging realism with an abstract sense of design.
